When we first planned to spend two nights in Savannah, Georgia, it was just a stopover before driving to Hilton Head Island. We went into this city with absolutely NO plan or list of things to do. Thankfully, we met a wonderful couple at the Old Town Trolley stop and our conversation with them led us on an itinerary I will never forget.
My husband and I felt like we spent the perfect kid-friendly day in Savannah, and I hope you get to experience it before your kids grow up!

A Kid-Friendly Day in Savannah
For this adventure, I recommend buying a day pass for the Old Town Trolley. These can be expensive, but check if your hotel or a local magazine offers coupons. We had a rental car, but we did not use it at all when we were in Savannah. The trolley was a great way to spend the day exploring, and everything else was walkable (despite the cracked sidewalks and cobblestone roads…). Just make sure you know about the River Street elevators!
First stop, Savannah Children’s Museum
This Children’s Museum is stunning. Take the Old Town Trolley to the Savannah Visitor’s Center. From there, it is a short walk to the museum. You enter at the Georgia State Railroad Museum and walk past a train turntable and historic rail cars before entering the Savannah Children’s Museum. The main courtyard has multiple activity stations before you head down the stairs (or the slide!) into a beautiful outdoor lower level. The museum is set in a historic train building, and the exhibits are top notch. There is so much for kids to do, and there is fun tucked in every corner. My kids had so much fun watering plants in the garden, getting lost in the maze, and playing in the hidden tunnels.
Plan to arrive at the museum right when it opens. This will maximize your time in the shade and minimize crowds! Bank of America card holders get in free on the first full weekend of the month!

Lunch and Shops at City Market
Take the trolley to one of the stops at City Market. This cute and colorful street is full of shops, restaurants, and bars with to-go drinks and alcoholic slushies!
We ordered a pizza from Vinnie Van GoGo’s and sat on a bench to picnic with the kids.

After lunch, we took the trolley back to our hotel for the kids’ naps. After nap, we hopped right back on the trolley to City Market again to continue exploring.
Short Walk to Plant Riverside District
You can take some of the steepest stairs ever, or look for one of the River Street elevators to take you down to Plant Riverside District. Walking through the JW Marriott lobby is something you cannot miss. It truly feels like a museum with fossils and a massive dinosaur skeleton hanging from the ceiling.
There are a ton of cute restaurants along the riverfront and a cute Starbucks as well. We enjoyed walking along the river all the way back to our hotel.

Do NOT Miss These Two Places in Savannah, Georgia
Pirate’s House
This was such a fun dinner spot, and perfect for our first night in Savannah. The food and menu was excellent, and the kids loved the pirate theming and pirate hat.
Forsyth Park
Forsyth Park is home to the well-known Forsyth Fountain, but it also has gorgeous trees, a large fenced-in playground, and a restaurant. We ordered lunch at the grab-n-go counter and ate picnic style while the kids played at the park.

Where we Stayed
We chose the Homewood Suites Savannah Historic District. This hotel was charming on the outside and perfectly situated along historic River Street right across from the Waving Girl Statue. There is a trolley stop just a block away, and the hotel was walkable to shops on River Street and the Pirate’s House restaurant.
This hotel offers suite-style rooms and incredible views. We enjoyed free breakfast and Wi-Fi, and we spent one evening at the rooftop pool ordering dinner and drinks from the poolside restaurant.
